The Costa del Sol has some of the best sunshine and beaches in the whole of Europe. Miles after mile of wide, sandy beaches lapped by the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. Beaches range from unbroken sandy shoreline to small secluded coves nestling under cliffs. The Costa del Sol is the best served of all the Spanish resorts for high class shopping such as designer wear from specialist fashion boutiques and leather goods from the many department stores.
The Costa del Sol also has perhaps the most exuberant nightlife. The streets are lined with lively bars, discos and nightclubs. Whether you want to dance the night away, sing in a karaoke contest or watch a cabaret, you’ll find an abundant choice on the Costa del Sol. You will also find a number of resorts, such as Estepona, Nerja and Marbella, where the nightlife is more low key. There you can enjoy tapas bars, romantic waterfront restaurants or a flamenco show.
55 kilometres east of Malaga, Nerja is quite different from other holiday resorts on the Costa Del Sol. The town of Nerja itself is sited on cliffs overlooking the bay and is a traditional yet lively Spanish town. Comparitively new as a holiday resort, the narrow streets lined with whitewashed buildings show the historic Moorish influence. The sandy and pebbly beaches are interspersed with rocky outcrops, giving a distinct and special character to each.
Nerja has a unique concert hall; a cavern in the vast cave system nearby has been converted into an auditorium. These caves are thought to be the second largest system in Europe, and 20,000 year old cave paintings have been found there.
As a change from the beaches, the region of Granada has much spectacular scenery and architecture to offer, with the Alhambra Palace perhaps the most impressive.
Beaches in Nerja
There are several beaches in Nerja. Burriana is the biggest and most popular, and has attractive promenade. All the beaches have areas of sand and shingle, excellent cafés and spectacular views across the bay.
Holiday Shopping in Nerja
Nerja is a very traditional town with small white-washed shops selling leather, jewellery and pottery.
Nerja Nightlife
Nerja's nightlife is relaxed rather than lively, revolving around restaurants and small bars rather than clubs.
Local Specialities of Nerja
There are many cafes, and intimate restaurants in Nerja. These range from Italian to Chinese but you must try the local bars serving Andalucian tapas, typically based on squid rings, tomato flavoured meatballs and spicy chorizo sausage.
